Effective August 20, 2026, two new visa-free travel regimes to China were introduced for Kyrgyz citizens: a 240-hour transit regime and a 30-day visa-free entry regime to Hainan Province. The corresponding announcement was published by the National Immigration Administration of China.
Under the 240-hour regime, holders of Kyrgyz passports can stay in China visa-free for up to 10 days when transiting through China to a third country or region. To do so, they must have a confirmed ticket with the date and itinerary of their onward journey. Entry is possible through 65 open border crossing points, including the international airports of Beijing and Shanghai. Travelers must adhere to the territorial restrictions established for this regime.
Citizens of Kyrgyzstan are also granted visa-free entry to Hainan Province for up to 30 days. Entry is permitted through open border crossing points, and stays are permitted within the province's administrative districts. The new regime applies, in particular, to tourism, business, private travel, and visiting relatives.
However, the visa-free regime does not apply to activities requiring prior permission. Work, study, and journalistic activities require a Chinese visa in advance.
Expanding visa-free travel is of not only tourism but also economic importance for Kyrgyzstan. China is one of the country's key trade and economic partners, and several major projects are being implemented between the two countries. Under these circumstances, simplified travel can stimulate business contacts, develop tourism, expand direct ties between entrepreneurs, and increase private travel.
The new regime is particularly significant against the backdrop of the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway. As regional transport connectivity develops, demand for simpler and faster border crossing mechanisms will increase. In this sense, the visa-free regime becomes an additional tool supporting the expansion of economic and humanitarian ties between Kyrgyzstan and China.
The Chinese model has different specifics. Beijing is not introducing a general visa-free regime for Kyrgyz citizens throughout the country, but is providing two targeted mechanisms: short-term transit of up to 240 hours and a separate 30-day regime for Hainan. This demonstrates a gradual expansion of access while simultaneously allowing China to control travel categories and stay conditions.
With the inclusion of Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam, the number of countries whose citizens are eligible for 240-hour visa-free transit through China has reached 57. The number of countries whose citizens are permitted 30-day visa-free entry to Hainan has increased to 61.
Thus, China's decision opens up a new format for interaction with one of the world's largest economies for Kyrgyz citizens. While the Russian and Kazakh visa-free regimes are based primarily on deep regional integration and close interstate ties, the Chinese mechanism is focused on expanding tourism, business, and transit mobility. For Kyrgyzstan, this creates additional opportunities to diversify external ties while simultaneously leveraging its growing transport and economic connectivity with China.
