Tajikistan sent a note of protest to Afghan authorities following the violation of its airspace, damage to residential buildings, and the death of a civilian in the Darvaz district, Asiaplus.tj reported.
According to the Tajik Foreign Ministry, armed clashes in border areas of the Afghan province of Badakhshan, directly adjacent to Tajik territory, were the cause. Dushanbe demanded that the Afghan side respect the inviolability of the state border and take measures to prevent similar incidents.
Tajik authorities viewed the incident as a threat to border security and a violation of international law. The incident has become yet another test for Dushanbe's difficult relationship with the current Afghan authorities.
The incident demonstrates how fragile Tajikistan's relations with Afghanistan remain since the Taliban came to power. Dushanbe has taken one of the most cautious stances in Central Asia regarding the Taliban, traditionally focusing on security issues, border protection, and preventing the infiltration of armed groups. Moreover, Dushanbe has been unsuccessfully pushing for the creation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.
For Tajikistan, the situation is particularly sensitive due to its long mountainous border with Afghanistan. Any escalation in Badakhshan directly poses risks to border communities. Dushanbe is interested in Afghanistan's stability and the development of trade and transport links, but is not prepared to compromise on security.
Thus, the protest note reflects not only a reaction to a specific incident but also the ongoing trust deficit between Dushanbe and Kabul. Unlike Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which are actively pursuing pragmatic dialogue with the Taliban, Tajikistan maintains a harder line. Further border violations could further complicate the prospects for political and economic cooperation.
