Turkmenistan has inducted and deployed China’s FK-2000 short-range air defense system, displaying it publicly for the first time during the Independence Day military parade in Ashgabat. Eight FK-2000 vehicles were included in the air-defense formation alongside Chinese-made FD-2000, KS-1A and FM-90 systems, chinadaily.com.cn reported.
The FK-2000 combines missiles and automatic guns with radar and electro-optical detection. According to its developers, it can engage a range of aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones, within a range of up to 25 kilometers. Its mobility allows the system to accompany ground forces and rapidly change positions.
The deployment is significant because it expands Turkmenistan’s already substantial portfolio of Chinese air-defense technology. It also demonstrates the growing role of Chinese defense equipment in Central Asian military modernization.
For Turkmenistan, the acquisition can be viewed primarily as an effort to strengthen protection of strategic infrastructure and military units against increasingly diverse aerial threats, particularly drones and precision weapons. The appearance of the system alongside several other Chinese platforms suggests that Ashgabat is developing a layered air-defense capability rather than relying on a single system.
At the regional level, the move illustrates China’s expanding defense-technology presence in Central Asia, while Turkmenistan continues to pursue its traditionally independent security policy and maintains military cooperation with multiple external partners.
