China’s BYD has discussed building an elevated monorail system in Bishkek with the Kyrgyz authorities, reported K-News.

Bakyt Torobaev, the Kyrgyz president’s special representative for special assignments, met a BYD delegation that came to Kyrgyzstan on a working visit at his invitation. Representatives of Bishkek City Hall and the ministries of finance and of transport and communications also took part. The two sides discussed how the project could be carried out and what further cooperation might follow.

The project is described as socially oriented. Its aims are to ease congestion in the capital, improve mobility and make the city a better place to live. No cost, route, line length, financing or timeline has been announced, and no agreement has been reported.

The talks followed Torobaev’s visit to a BYD facility in Xi’an in October, Kaktus.media reported earlier. There he proposed an elevated monorail metro for Bishkek and asked the company to study the city’s main routes and prepare an economic assessment. “A city’s development is not measured by the height of its buildings,” he said at the time. He argued that it is measured by how much time it saves people.

BYD, founded in Shenzhen in 1995, is a world leader in electric vehicles and batteries and has developed its own SkyRail monorail system. In Bishkek, a city of about 1.2 million, car ownership is rising fast and traffic jams and winter smog are severe. The project would add to China’s expanding role in Kyrgyz infrastructure.
