Construction of the Rogun hydropower plant is moving towards the launch of a third generating unit in September 2027, reported Asiaplus.tj after a visit to the site on October 29.

The two units already in operation have generated more than 11 billion kWh since they were commissioned. The reservoir was raised to 1,140 metres above sea level this year and is due to reach 1,165 metres in 2027.

When complete, Rogun will have six 630-megawatt units with a total capacity of 3,780 MW and an average design output of 14.4 billion kWh a year. Its 335-metre rock-fill dam will be the tallest of its kind in the world. More than 20,000 people work on the site, including over 2,000 foreign specialists, according to station representatives.

The visit came days after an incident on October 21, when a process water tank collapsed inside a tunnel. An engineer interviewed by Asia-Plus said workers received first aid, none were seriously injured and the structure was not damaged.

Rogun is central to Tajikistan’s plans to end winter power shortages and to export electricity to neighbouring countries. A related Asia-Plus report says the EBRD is considering financing for the next phase of the project.
