Turkmenistan Expands Transit Potential Thanks to Customs Digitalization

According to the country's State Customs Service, cargo traffic across the country increased significantly in the first half of the year thanks to the modernization of border infrastructure and the introduction of digital technologies, Orient.tm reports.

From January to June, more than 10.5 million tons of cargo were transported across Turkmenistan's state border, a 10% increase compared to the same period last year. Foreign trade shipments grew by 6%, with transit being the most dynamic segment. The volume of transit cargo exceeded 3.5 million tons, a 15% increase year-on-year. Moreover, the geography of shipments expanded to 94 countries.

This growth is largely due to the digitalization of customs administration. Modern inspection and screening systems and electronic clearance systems significantly reduce border clearance times, increase the throughput of checkpoints, and reduce administrative costs for carriers.

Experts note that these results reflect a broader trend of Turkmenistan's growing role in regional logistics. As Eurasian states strive to diversify cargo delivery routes, the republic is becoming an important link in the international East-West and North-South transport corridors. The development of transport infrastructure, including road and rail networks, allows Ashgabat to strengthen its competitive advantage in the competition for transit flows.

If current momentum continues, Turkmenistan will be able not only to increase revenues from transit services but also to strengthen its importance as a strategic transport partner for countries in Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Europe.
