ASHGABAT - Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree authorizing the conclusion of a trilateral agreement for the joint development of license blocks in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea, Orient.tm reports.

The decision was made on the eve of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Ashgabat and became a key signal of the further deepening of energy cooperation between the two countries.

According to the document, the Turkmennebit State Concern will be authorized to sign an agreement with the Malaysian company Petronas Çarigali (Türkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd and the state-owned enterprise Hazarneft for the joint development of offshore fields.

The decision is in accordance with Turkmenistan's Law "On Hydrocarbon Resources" and is aimed at increasing the efficiency of Caspian reserve development and attracting long-term foreign investment in the oil and gas sector.

The new project is becoming an important element of Ashgabat's strategy to diversify its international energy partnerships. Petronas remains one of the largest foreign players in the Turkmen oil and gas market, operating in the country for nearly three decades.

During Anwar Ibrahim's visit, which arrives in Turkmenistan on the evening of June 18, the two sides are expected to discuss further expansion of energy cooperation. According to Turkmen media, Malaysia's participation in industrial drilling projects at the largest gas field, Galkynysh, is being considered as a promising area.

A business forum, "Turkmenistan-Malaysia: 30 Years of Mutually Beneficial Cooperation in the Oil and Gas Sector," will also be held on June 19, where new joint energy initiatives may be presented.
