Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed establishing a Council for the development of the Eurasian route within the framework of the international “North–South” transport corridor, reports Kazinform.

“The Council could be chaired by the heads of our countries’ transport ministries, with the participation of specialists, experts, and entrepreneurs,” President Tokayev said during the Second “Central Asia – Russia” Summit in Dushanbe.

He also announced the launch of a Joint Program for investment and infrastructure support of the corridor’s eastern branch, involving international financial institutions and development banks.

Tokayev outlined concrete plans for developing transport infrastructure, including the renovation of 11,000 kilometers of railways and the construction of more than 5,000 kilometers of new lines by 2030. The section from Kyzylorda to the Russian border will be upgraded to four-lane capacity. Last year, freight volumes along the eastern branch of the “North–South” corridor reached 2.5 million tons, with plans to double capacity by 2027.

The President highlighted that trade with Russia accounts for one-third of total trade in Central Asia, noting that bilateral trade between Kazakhstan and Russia reached $28 billion (2.24 trillion rubles) in 2024. He emphasized the importance of further developing transport and logistics links across the Eurasian space.
