TASHKENT - An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated National Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission has begun work at the Uzatom Agency. The experts' visit is aimed at analyzing the current status and level of readiness of Uzbekistan for the development of nuclear energy, Uza.uz reports.
In Uzbekistan, the development of nuclear energy is viewed as an important factor in long-term economic growth and strengthening the country's energy security. The country's authorities emphasize the importance of international cooperation and compliance with IAEA standards in implementing the national program.
The mission's primary objective is to assess progress in developing nuclear infrastructure, analyze the implementation of the recommendations of the previous 2021 mission, and prepare proposals for improving the regulatory, institutional, and managerial framework in the nuclear energy sector.
The mission included experts from Jordan, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Turkey, with experience conducting similar assessments in Asian and European countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Poland, Estonia, and Kazakhstan.
Uzbekistan is represented by the Uzatom Agency and the Committee for Industrial, Radiation, and Nuclear Safety. The parties are discussing progress since the 2021 mission and the current state of key infrastructure elements.
Special attention is being paid to the first integrated nuclear power plant project. IAEA experts are assessing the infrastructure's readiness for the next phase of implementation, including safety and regulatory issues.
According to the Uzbek side, a number of IAEA recommendations to strengthen the regulatory framework and develop competencies have already been implemented. The results are currently being assessed and future priorities are being identified, including plans for 2040.
The mission will continue until June 26. Based on its findings, the IAEA will prepare a report with recommendations for the further development of nuclear infrastructure and the safe operation of future facilities in Uzbekistan.
