Tokayev Ratifies Customs Agreements with Uzbekistan and Pakistan

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed two laws ratifying international customs agreements with Uzbekistan and Pakistan, reported Tengrinews, citing the Akorda press service.

The first agreement allows the customs services of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to open representative offices in each other’s countries. Permanent customs representatives are expected to speed up communication between the two services, resolve problems at the border more quickly and support the growing flow of goods between Central Asia’s two largest economies.

The second agreement, with Pakistan, covers cooperation and mutual administrative assistance in customs matters. Such agreements usually provide for information exchange, joint efforts against customs fraud and smuggling, and coordination of procedures.

The Pakistan agreement fits Kazakhstan’s effort to develop southern trade routes. Central Asian countries are seeking access to Pakistan’s seaports through Afghanistan as an alternative to traditional routes to world markets, and smoother customs cooperation is a precondition for that traffic to grow.

The publication did not specify when the agreements were signed or when they will enter into force.
