ASTANA - From January to May 2026, Kazakhstan's power plants generated 53.6 billion kWh of electricity, while consumption amounted to 53.3 billion kWh. Thus, the surplus in the energy system exceeded 300 million kWh, the Kazakh Ministry of Energy reported, Forbes.kz reports.

According to the ministry, this result demonstrates the stable operation of generating capacity and the reliable supply of domestic electricity demand. By the end of 2026, electricity production in the country is projected to reach 126.5 billion kWh.

To further strengthen energy security, Kazakhstan plans to commission 2.6 GW of new capacity. This year, four gas-fired power plants are expected to launch, along with the expansion of two existing generation facilities. In addition, ten renewable energy facilities, including wind, solar, and hydroelectric power plants, will be commissioned.

The Ministry of Energy expects that the implementation of these projects will eliminate the electricity deficit by the end of the first quarter of 2027 and create a sustainable surplus in the power grid by 2029.

In recent years, Kazakhstan has partially covered its electricity shortfall by importing from Russia. However, the gap between production and consumption is gradually narrowing: from 2.1 billion kWh in 2024 to 1.5 billion kWh in 2025. The deficit is projected to decrease to 1–1.2 billion kWh in 2026, confirming the positive development trend in the country's energy sector.
