Turkmenistan is holding preliminary talks with international companies on building modern data centres for high-performance computing, reported Turkmenportal.com, citing Deputy Minister of Energy Serdar Saparov.
Saparov made the statement at the CIET-2026 international conference and exhibition in Ashgabat on November 3–5. He said the data centres would use surplus electricity, attract investment and create high-tech infrastructure. The companies involved were not named. Turkmenistan’s law “On Virtual Assets” has been in force since January 1, 2026.
The plan builds on the country’s power surplus. The Ministry of Energy runs 11 power plants with a combined installed capacity of more than 6,500 MW, which fully covers domestic demand and supports growing electricity exports. A unified ring energy system has been completed.
The ministry is also modernising and digitalising its grids, including a possible automated metering system with smart meters. The Asian Development Bank is supporting studies of wind resources, while the European Union has granted green certificates and Germany’s GIZ is involved in cooperation projects. Students of the State Energy Institute train at solar and wind facilities.
Data centres are a new direction for Ashgabat’s efforts to earn more from its energy resources than exports of gas alone.
