A series of meetings has taken place in Afghanistan between a “high-level Tajikistan delegation,” which arrived in Kabul several days ago, and representatives of the Taliban government, according to major Afghan media outlets. Reports say the Tajik delegation has already held negotiations with Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and is preparing for meetings with Taliban government head Mohammad Hassan Akhund and intelligence chief Abdul Haq Wasiq.
According to Tolonews, the talks focused on political relations between Dushanbe and Kabul, as well as ways to expand bilateral trade.
The Omu TV channel reports that the Tajik delegation consists of 14 officials from security agencies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other state bodies. The group includes the first deputy head of the Border Troops of the State Committee for National Security, national security experts, and senior officials from regional and governmental structures.
Although the details of the negotiations have not yet been disclosed, Afghan media claim that the key objective of the visit is to strengthen political dialogue and security cooperation.
It is worth noting that in October a Taliban government delegation led by Yusuf Wafa visited Kabul.
Meanwhile, Tajikistan’s official authorities have not commented on the ongoing contacts. Afghan media describe the intensified exchanges as a “shift in approach” by Dushanbe toward the Taliban, suggesting that discussions may include future joint projects, regional cooperation, and even the possible transfer of the Afghan Embassy in Dushanbe to Taliban control.
Despite Tajikistan remaining the only Central Asian country to officially declare the absence of direct relations with the Taliban, the growing number of reciprocal visits by security and diplomatic representatives of both sides fuels speculation about a potential softening of Dushanbe’s position.
Earlier reports mentioned a Tajik delegation led by Zarobiddin Faizullozoda visiting Kunduz, as well as Yusuf Wafa’s trip to Dushanbe — the highest-ranking Taliban representative to visit Tajikistan since the group took power. Afghan media have also written about a visit to Kabul by Tajikistan’s security chief Saimumin Yatimov.
None of these visits have been officially confirmed or denied by Tajik authorities.
