Tajikistan and Pakistan Energy Ministers Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and CASA-1000 Project

The Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan, Daler Juma, held a virtual meeting with the Federal Minister of Energy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari. The parties discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly within the framework of the regional CASA-1000 project, Avesta.tj reports.

As co-chairs of the Joint Commission of Tajikistan and Pakistan on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, the ministers reviewed a wide range of issues related to the development of bilateral relations. A key focus of the discussion was cooperation in the energy sector, including the implementation of the CASA-1000 (Central Asia–South Asia) electricity transmission project, designed to facilitate the export of surplus hydropower from Central Asian countries to energy-deficient regions of South Asia.

During the talks, both sides highly appreciated the contribution of the Joint Commission to strengthening trade, economic, scientific and technical ties between the two states. They emphasized the importance of regular high-level dialogue for the timely resolution of practical tasks and the expansion of cooperation.

The ministers expressed readiness to continue constructive dialogue and discussed organizational matters regarding the 8th session of the Joint Commission of Tajikistan and Pakistan. The event is expected to take place in Dushanbe in the near future, with the exact date to be confirmed separately.

Background: CASA-1000 Project

CASA-1000 is an international infrastructure project involving the construction of a 1,000 MW high-voltage transmission line to transfer seasonal surplus electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The project aims to enhance regional energy security and establish sustainable mechanisms for cross-border energy exchange.
