Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved an agreement on comprehensive partnership in migration and mobility between the governments of Uzbekistan and Germany by a decree issued on March 4, Gazeta.uz reports.
The document was signed on September 15, 2024, in Samarkand during the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The Migration Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers has been designated as the competent authority responsible for external labor migration, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan will oversee readmission.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Poverty Reduction of Uzbekistan, the document consists of 25 articles and aims to promote fair mobility for skilled professionals, including students, vocational trainees, journalists, and scientists seeking to work in both countries.
Additionally, the agreement seeks to encourage and facilitate temporary labor migration, as well as long-term stays for work, vocational education, and professional training.
Both sides will also cooperate in preventing and combating illegal migration, human smuggling, labor exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking, while also addressing victim protection.
The document also includes provisions for transit arrangements to return foreigners to third countries. Media reports suggest that Afghans may be deported via Tashkent.
