At the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), a resolution titled "Strengthening Cooperation on Water Resources and Climate Change for Sustainable Development in the Asia-Pacific Region" was unanimously adopted at the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan, according to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the resolution, the parties welcomed Tajikistan’s initiatives to host the International Conference on Glacier Protection in 2025 and the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the UN Water Conference in 2026. The resolution also calls on all UN member states, relevant UN bodies, other international and regional organizations, and interested stakeholders to participate in these events.
Furthermore, the resolution notes that the proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Preservation, the recognition of March 21 as World Glacier Day, and Tajikistan’s hosting of the International Conference on Glacier Preservation in 2025 contribute to strengthening international solidarity.
The adoption of this initiative once again demonstrates Tajikistan’s important role in promoting the global agenda on water resources and climate, including glacier protection, the portal Avesta.tj comments.
