At the “Central Asia – Russia” summit in Dushanbe, Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedow advocated for closer energy cooperation with neighboring countries and Russia, including initiatives in renewable and “green” energy, reports Turkmenistan Today.
The Turkmen leader emphasized the importance of aligning interests in electricity supply and expanding export routes, particularly toward southern regions. “We underscore the significance of energy partnership… We propose exploring the coordination of electricity supply interests… as well as access to neighboring regions,” he said.
Berdimuhamedow highlighted that Turkmenistan possesses both the potential and expertise for collaboration in renewable energy, noting that the country’s accumulated experience should be leveraged to strengthen regional energy security.
In recent years, Ashgabat has actively sought to diversify its energy exports and increase the share of “clean” energy. Plans include the development of solar and wind projects, as well as participation in cross-border power grid initiatives with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran.
Given the geographic proximity and interconnected nature of Central Asia’s energy systems, synchronizing grids and establishing interstate electricity corridors could reduce transmission losses, improve resilience to peak loads, and open new export routes to southern and southeastern markets.
