Turkmenistan and Iran plan to construct two new railway lines at the Sarakhs border crossing to increase rail transport capacity, Iran’s Railway Director Jabbbar Ali Zakeri announced following a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Minister of Railways, Mammet Akmammedov.

The agreement was reached during bilateral talks in Turkmenbashi on the sidelines of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development reported on August 12, as cited by Business Turkmenistan.

Zakeri explained that the project will include one standard-gauge and one broad-gauge line between the Sarakhs stations on both sides of the border. He emphasized the importance of expanding railway routes to strengthen transport connectivity between the two countries and noted that expert meetings between the railway administrations will be organized to implement the plans.

The Sarakhs border crossing is a key transit hub linking Iran, Central Asia, and other regions, and forms part of the International North–South Transport Corridor.
