On August 5, a high-level national roundtable discussion on strengthening the system of support for exclusive breastfeeding was held in Ashgabat.
The event, organized by the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charitable Foundation jointly with the UNICEF Turkmenistan Office as part of World Breastfeeding Week, brought together representatives of the government, international organizations, parliament, the diplomatic corps, and the medical community, Orient.tm reports.
Participants discussed improving state policy on maternal and child health, expanding the network of breastfeeding consultants, developing awareness-raising campaigns, and creating a more favorable environment for breastfeeding mothers. Following the meeting, a plan for further joint action was agreed upon.
The roundtable reflects Turkmenistan's commitment to strengthening its public health system through preventive measures and early child development.
Support for breastfeeding is consistent with World Health Organization recommendations and is considered one of the most effective tools for reducing infant morbidity, strengthening children's immunity, and improving maternal health.
For the country, this is also part of a broader policy of investing in human capital, where population health is becoming an important factor in long-term socioeconomic development.
The active participation of UNICEF and UN agencies demonstrates continued international cooperation in healthcare, and the proposed measures to engage the medical community, the media, and businesses indicate a shift toward a comprehensive approach that unites government institutions and public initiatives to improve the quality of healthcare for families with children.
