Turkmenistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vepa Khadzhiev, spoke at the UN Security Council's high-level open debate on the responsible management of natural resources as an important factor in ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development, Orient.tm reports.
In his speech, the diplomat noted that Ashgabat views natural resources not as a source of competition and conflict between states, but as a foundation for economic development, international cooperation, and strengthening regional connectivity. He stated that Turkmenistan continues to promote an approach in which energy, water, and environmental issues should be resolved through dialogue and multilateral mechanisms.
Particular attention was paid to preventive diplomacy, a key pillar of the country's foreign policy. Turkmenistan's initiatives in the areas of energy security, transport corridors, rational use of water resources, and environmental protection are reflected in 32 UN General Assembly resolutions adopted at Ashgabat's initiative.
During the speech, Turkmenistan's readiness to continue its participation in the UN and to run for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for 2031–2032 was also confirmed.
For Ashgabat, participation in Security Council discussions is of great diplomatic importance. Turkmenistan seeks to strengthen its international image as a neutral state capable of mediating on issues of regional security, energy, and sustainable development. Promoting responsible resource management allows the country to expand its diplomatic influence and shape a positive agenda around its own strategic interests.
Energy diplomacy is of particular importance to Turkmenistan. Possessing some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, Ashgabat is interested in creating stable and secure energy export mechanisms, as well as developing new transport and energy projects. An emphasis on cooperation, rather than competition for resources, allows the country to strengthen relations with the UN and international partners, enhancing its role in discussions of global energy and environmental security issues.
