DUSHANBE - Tajikistan ranked 47th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index 2026, placing it among the world's 50 most peaceful and safe countries, according to the annual report of the international Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Avesta.tj reports.

The country's index score was 1.799. This puts the country ahead of several European and Asian countries, including Kuwait, Armenia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Costa Rica.

Among the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Tajikistan ranked fifth, behind only Bulgaria, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Romania. However, the country scored higher than Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus.

The study's authors noted that Eastern Europe and Central Asia was the only region to see an improvement in peacefulness over the past year.

The Global Peace Index evaluates countries based on 23 criteria, including public safety, the presence of conflict, and the degree of militarization. Iceland once again topped the 2026 ranking.
