A significant step towards enhancing transport connectivity in Central Asia was made during a trilateral working meeting of delegations from the state railway companies of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. The meeting took place in Kazakhstan, reports Trend, citing the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan.

The discussions focused on increasing railway freight volumes and optimizing the operation of key intergovernmental transport hubs, such as Oasis in Tajikistan and Saryagash in Uzbekistan.

According to the participants, railway freight traffic between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan reached a record 11.5 million tonnes in 2024. In the first four months of 2025, an average of 26 trains passed through the Saryagash hub daily, highlighting its importance as a key link in the regional transport system.

Particular attention was given to the growth of container shipments: in 2024, this sector saw a 104% increase, equivalent to 144 container trains operating on the China–Central Asia route. This trend reflects the growing interest of the region's countries in containerized transportation.

Participants emphasized the importance of the timely reception and dispatch of goods, which directly contributes to increasing the share of container transport and the overall growth of freight volumes.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, 1.904 million tonnes of cargo were transported in the country from January to March 2025—an increase of 12.8% compared to the same period in 2024.

Rail transport remains the dominant mode for international cargo shipments in Tajikistan, accounting for 71.8% of the country’s total international freight turnover, underscoring its strategic importance for the regional economy.

Thus, the deepening cooperation between Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in railway transportation is becoming an increasingly relevant and promising direction, fostering not only the development of transport infrastructure but also the strengthening of economic ties in Central Asia.
