Bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan reached approximately $40 million in the first five months of 2025 - a 31.1% increase compared to the same period last year, according to a report from Tajikistan’s Statistics Agency, reports Asiaplus.tj.
Tajik exports accounted for around 80% of the total trade volume, amounting to $32 million, while Afghan exports to Tajikistan totaled nearly $8 million.
Electricity remains Tajikistan’s main export to Afghanistan, along with cement, coal, mineral fertilizers, and limited volumes of food products and construction materials.
Tajikistan primarily imports agricultural goods from Afghanistan, including figs, raisins, and cotton. Afghan carpets, as well as precious and semi-precious stones, are also imported.
Afghanistan remains one of Tajikistan’s top ten export markets, following the Netherlands, China, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
Overall, Tajikistan maintained trade relations with 107 countries during the January–May 2025 period. Total foreign trade reached $3.9 billion - a 2.8% increase year-on-year.
Exports stood at $780 million, down 11.3% from the same period in 2024, while imports grew by 7%, exceeding $3.1 billion.
Russia, China, and Kazakhstan continue to be Tajikistan’s leading trade partners.
