Tajik company Pomir Energy and Afghan national power operator Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) have amended their existing agreement for electricity supplies to border areas of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, Avesta.tj reported. The document was signed by company executives Raim Amrikhan and Mullah Abdulhak Hamkar.
The agreement extends power supply to 6,900 existing customers in the districts of Moimay, Nusay, Shugnan, and Ishkashim. To increase exports, Pomir Energy commissioned a 110 kV substation in the Ishkashim district of GBAO, which will allow for the transmission of excess power. DABS, in turn, expressed its readiness to begin construction of the associated grid infrastructure in Afghanistan. The parties also began technical development of a 110 kV transmission line project to the city of Faizabad, which will connect new settlements, including Bakhorak, to the grid.
The signing of the agreement demonstrates the continued pragmatic format of cooperation between Dushanbe and Kabul in the area of critical infrastructure. For Tajikistan, exporting summer surplus hydropower through the isolated power system of GBAO is an economically viable step, allowing the region to monetize its generating capacity without placing a strain on the national grid.
For Badakhshan, Afghanistan, electrification of the border area remains key to preventing a humanitarian crisis and maintaining basic social activity. The expansion of the grid to Faizabad strengthens Tajikistan's role as a key energy supplier to Afghanistan's northern provinces, confirming that cross-border energy cooperation remains a resilient channel of communication, despite political factors.
