The United Nations has announced that Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, will address the Security Council in a session about the situation in Afghanistan, Khaama.com reports.

According to a newsletter released on Tuesday, March 4, the meeting will be held under the rotating presidency of Denmark. This session will cover various critical issues, including Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis.

The United Nations also stated that discussions in March will focus on Afghanistan, Yemen, the Middle East peace process, and Syria. These conversations are part of broader diplomatic efforts on multiple fronts.

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has worsened, with UNICEF reporting that 22.9 million people, including 12 million children, will need aid in 2025.

The country faces severe challenges, including widespread food insecurity, limited healthcare, and a lack of basic necessities. The crisis has been worsened by climate change and ongoing instability, putting vulnerable communities at greater risk.

OCHA has also raised serious concerns, highlighting that nearly 15 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity, with 3.1 million experiencing acute hunger. As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, millions remain uncertain about where their next meal will come from.

The United Nations agencies have stressed the importance of sustained humanitarian aid to address these needs and prevent a worsening catastrophe, as many are already at risk of famine and disease.

The head of UNAMA, who has been closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan, will deliver an important speech on the current situation in the country on March 10th.

Additionally, a briefing session on the collaboration between the United Nations and the European Union will be organized. This session will aim to strengthen partnerships for addressing global crises, including Afghanistan’s.

On March 17, the UN Security Council will reconvene to discuss Afghanistan once again. This meeting will likely center on the potential extension of UNAMA’s mandate, which remains crucial for international support in the region.
