The timely launch of a nuclear power plant and renewable energy facilities is vital to ensuring Kazakhstan’s stable energy supply, according to a statement from the KAZENERGY Association.
Experts from the association emphasized this in light of surging electricity demand driven by the rapid growth of data centers and artificial intelligence technologies.
“The cryptocurrency boom of 2021 exposed the vulnerabilities of our national energy system,” KAZENERGY noted.
The association stressed that maintaining a sustainable energy balance depends on three key factors:

Commissioning new power generation capacities (including nuclear and renewables),

Investing in energy storage systems,

Upgrading the national grid infrastructure.
Kazakhstan holds strong competitive advantages for developing a digital economy—its strategic geographic location, abundant resources, and growing investor interest. However, KAZENERGY underlined that turning the country into a regional hub for data processing and AI will require serious investment in energy security, infrastructure, and workforce development.
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy has previously forecasted potential electricity shortages as early as 2025–2026. Against this backdrop, experts are urging strict oversight of all energy project timelines and budgets.
