The Government of Kazakhstan has approved regulations for the cultivation of cannabis for industrial purposes, not related to the production of narcotic drugs, reports Kazinform.

The rules are now in effect. The maximum allowable content of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the dry mass of the plant is set at 0.3%. Seed testing is conducted prior to sowing, while plant analysis is carried out during the active growth period (40–45 days after sowing) and at the pre-harvest stage (90–120 days). Inspections are performed by forensic authorities at the expense of licensed legal entities.

Only varieties included in the State Register and that have passed official varietal testing are permitted for sowing; second and subsequent seed reproductions are prohibited. Cultivation is allowed exclusively under a valid license.

Sowing areas must be located at least 2 km from residential areas, roads, and other agricultural crops. Protective zones, fencing, a single entry/exit point, and round-the-clock security are mandatory. Seed and plant samples must be submitted to forensic authorities immediately, packaging should be numbered, and if THC limits are exceeded, the entire planting area is subject to inspection and possible destruction.
