ISIS Activity In Afghanistan "Completely Suppressed," Interior Ministry Said

Kabul has announced the complete dismantling of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) terrorist network in Afghanistan. The statement was made by Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani during a seminar for provincial inspectors from all 34 provinces, Ariana News reported.

According to Qani, “the subversive elements of ISIS in Afghanistan have been fully suppressed, and there is no cause for concern.” He stressed that the group’s command and control are “typically directed from abroad” and added that government agencies are closely monitoring the country’s borders to prevent militants from entering under the guise of migrants.

The remarks come amid growing concern from international organizations, including the UN and the EU, which have previously warned of the risk of recruitment among Afghan refugees. Qani assured that Afghan security forces “will not allow this to happen.”

Independent experts, however, caution that the threat may not be entirely eliminated. Hans-Jakob Schindler, former coordinator of the UN monitoring team on extremist groups, has pointed to the risk of a resurgence of ISIS’s local branch, “Wilayat Khorasan,” noting that returning Afghan refugees could be viewed by militants as a potential source of recruitment. These warnings highlight that Kabul’s assurances of complete security coexist with international analysts’ concerns about lingering risks should regional conditions deteriorate.
