In Turkmenistan’s Avaza National Tourist Zone, the international scientific and practical conference “The Caspian Sea – a Sea of Friendship and Peace” opened to mark Caspian Sea Day, Turkmenportal.com reported.

The forum brings together representatives of the diplomatic missions of the Caspian littoral states — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Russia — as well as delegates from international organizations, including the United Nations, UNEP, UNDP, the European Union, and the OSCE.

The conference agenda includes discussions on implementing the Tehran Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea’s Marine Environment, the ornithological importance of the Caspian basin, and the role of Turkmenistan’s Khazar State Nature Reserve in preserving the region’s biodiversity.

Special attention will be given to compliance with environmental standards at the Turkmenbashi International Seaport and the development of ecotourism in the Avaza zone.

Experts from the International Maritime Law Institute, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Bank are participating via video link.

The conference will also address prospects for hydrometeorological cooperation among Caspian states and the role of the Caspian Sea in strengthening regional cooperation and good-neighborly relations.
