China Becomes the Main Driver of Tajikistan's Foreign Trade Growth

China accounted for the largest increase in both Tajikistan's exports and imports in the first half of 2026, Avesta.tj reported.

Exports to China increased by $212.6 million compared to the same period last year, significantly outpacing other destinations.

Tajikistan’s expanding trade relations with China are taking place amid steady economic growth. The country’s GDP reached approximately $14 billion in 2025, with economic growth supported by industry, construction, agriculture, and services.

Foreign trade remains an important component of the economy, with total trade turnover exceeding $8 billion annually, while China has become one of the country’s leading trade partners.

At the same time, imports of Chinese products increased by $362.3 million. Significant increases were also recorded from Russia (+$224.6 million), Kazakhstan (+$174.6 million), Germany (+$36.1 million), and Iran (+$29.9 million).

Among export markets after China, Belgium, Russia, and Kazakhstan showed the most significant growth, while exports to the Netherlands decreased by almost $194.3 million.

Analytical Commentary

These results confirm the accelerating shift in Tajikistan's foreign trade toward Asian markets. China has already become not only a major source of investment and infrastructure projects but also a key trading partner for the country.

Given the relatively limited size of Tajikistan’s domestic market and export base, expanding trade relations with large economies has become an important factor supporting economic growth.

A similar trend is observed in other Central Asian states. For Kyrgyzstan, China remains the largest supplier of imported goods and a major investor, Kazakhstan is actively expanding industrial and logistics cooperation with Beijing, and Uzbekistan has become one of the leading recipients of Chinese investment in the region in recent years.

Against this backdrop, Tajikistan is increasingly integrating into regional production and transport chains emerging as part of Chinese economic initiatives.

At the same time, growing dependence on a single external partner highlights the need to diversify export markets, increase domestic production capacity, and expand access to European, Middle Eastern, and regional markets amid ongoing global trade uncertainty.
