Abuses by Security Services to be Investigated in Kyrgyzstan

Any abuses by State Committee for National Security (GKNB) officers will be strictly suppressed, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov stated in an interview with the Kabar news agency. He emphasized that no one is immune, and the law applies to everyone, including their close relatives.

Commenting on reports that individual security officers committed illegal actions under the guise of former security service head Kamchybek Tashiev, Japarov assured:

  • All cases of abuse of power will be investigated.
  • Those responsible will be held accountable, regardless of their position.
  • The fight against corruption and crime in the country will continue until they are completely eradicated.

President Japarov noted that the GKNB has fulfilled its current mission but now requires a qualitative transformation to combat new global threats.

"The world is changing, and our institutions must keep pace with the times. "The State Committee for National Security will be reformed to meet modern challenges," Sadyr Japarov stated.

On February 10, Japarov dismissed Kamchybek Tashiev and his three deputies. Zhumgalbek Shabdanbekov was appointed acting chairman. The decision was justified by the need to strengthen state unity and prevent divisions in society. Kamchybek Tashiev had headed the State Committee for National Security since October 2020.

Meanwhile, Kamchybek Tashiev, who had been dismissed as head of Kyrgyzstan's special services, has returned to Bishkek. He was in Germany for a medical examination following heart surgery he underwent in Munich back in 2021. His return to Kyrgyzstan did not cause any stir in the country, but discussions about his removal from office and the detention of active participants of the "Appeal of 75" continue in the media, particularly on social media.
